Aviation Aerospace Museum MUSAL Rio de Janeiro – Brazil

Aerospace / Aviation Museum MUSAL in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil
The Museu Aeroespacial – MUSAL (Aerospace Museum) was created in 1971, as an initiative of the then Aeronautics Minister, Ten.-Brig.-do-Ar Joelmir Campos de Araripe Macedo. That year saw the completion of the transference of the Air Force Academy to Pirassununga, leaving vacant the hangars at the Campo dos Afonsos, where since then the MUSAL is housed.

Being subordinated to the Historic and Cultural Aeronautics Institute, the MUSAL is responsible for the keeping of a collection of more than fifty airplanes, as well as photographies, slides, maps and a library holding more than four thousand volumes, all of which are important documents of the history of aviation in Brazil.

The MUSAL may be visited in the following hours (entrance is free):
Tuesdays to Fridays: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM
closed national holidays

The Museum has loaned artifacts to other museums for short periods not exceeding 45 days; no artifact exchange program with other institutions. The auditorium has 104 seats.
The building plans for the future are currently with the construction of new office facilities and one display room. Enlargement of the museum’s aircraft display area by constructing five hangars and two buildings; project awaits funding approval. The conservation program contents large objects: periodic preservation work for aircraft received in air-worthy condition; extensive restoration executed on aircraft requiring such work, followed by periodic preservation and maintenance work. The indoor exhibition square footage is around 50,700. There have methods of exhibitry like as wall panels, display cases, labels only in front of large artifacts and thematic displays. Visitors per year: 41,000.

The Museu Aeroespacial is not a foundation but a military organization within the Brazilian Air Ministry and subordinated to the Air Minister’s Office. The Museu Aeroespacial is unable to execute fund raising programs owing to existing regulations within the Brazilian Air Force which prohibit such activities. However, it is the current intention of the Air Minister’s Office to exempt the museum from such restrictions, giving it substantially more latitude to raise money.

The library accessible to the public.
